Art History Essays

Orientalism

This is an exhibition I created for a modern art history class. It explores how Western artists represented the "Orient". Building on Edward Said’s theory, the exhibition questions how religion, particularly Islam, complicates the West’s exoticized and often erotic depictions of these regions.

Cellini's Ambition

This is an essay that I wrote for my Renaissance art history class about Benvenuto Cellini’s Perseus and Medusa Sculpture and its intertwining use of mythology, politics, and materiality. Through its creation process and strategic placement, the piece functions as a material allegory.

The Perplexing Depth of Seurat’s Dots

In this essay, I explore George Seurat's pointillism technique and it's creation in depth of luminosity. Through examination of his color placement and organization in his brushstrokes we can understand the visual elements of the painting.
